“MOTORCYCLE Insurance”.
We all have insurance for our bikes. But how much about your bike insurance do you really know? What happens when you have an accident? What coverage do you have? Does your Insurance Company specialize in motorcycles? You customize your bike to match your style…shouldn’t your insurance do the same?
We understand what riding means to you. In fact, the company that we represent has more than 600 agents who ride and many more who understand riders. That’s why our motorcycle insurance offers features you can appreciate. When you’re riding, the last thing you want to worry about, is if you, your bike and your passenger have the right protection.
I personally ride a Harley Road King. I enjoy riding in the mountains and national parks of Utah.
Now let’s talk about a few things that are important to Motorcycle Insurance.
How does Motorcycle insurance work?
What does Motorcycle insurance cover?
Liability Coverage
When you think of liability insurance, I wanted you to think about what you could lose if you were sued. Liability Insurance could be the cheapest insurance you could buy!
Bodily Injury Liability
No one ever wants to get in an accident – especially not one in which someone gets hurt. Unfortunately, the reality is that accidents happen and people get hurt. In the event that you are in an accident and the driver of the other vehicle gets hurt, your Bodily Injury Liability coverage comes into play. This coverage protects you from someone for whom you become legally liable due to a motorcycle accident that causes injury, sickness or death.
Keep in mind, this motorcycle insurance coverage does not cover your injuries, only those to others for which you are legally liable. There are options for limits of liability of which you can choose.
Property Damage Liability
You were having a great ride, loving life, but you were daydreaming a little and didn’t stop quite in time to avoid hitting the car that was stopped in front of you at the stop sign.
Property Damage Liability coverage provides protection for other people’s property if you become legally liable for damages that occurred while operating your insured motorcycle. Remember, this motorcycle insurance coverage does not protect your bike or you, but will pay for damage to other people’s property for which you are legally liable. There are options for limits of liability of which you can choose as well.
Guest Passenger Liability
You’re at a rally, and someone begs you for a ride on your motorcycle. Being the nice person that you are, you agree. Then, unfortunately, you have an accident and your passenger is injured. Guest Passenger Liability insurance coverage protects you in the event you become legally liable due to an accident to a passenger who is not listed as an insured on the policy. A Guest if you will. There are options for limits of liability of which you can choose for this coverage too.
Medical Coverage
It’s a sad fact, but sometimes motorcycle accidents lead to injuries of the motorcyclist or passenger.
While your health insurance will be there to help with the medical bills, it’s an unfortunate truth that many people either don’t have medical insurance or the medical insurance they do have is insufficient. Even if the medical insurance is sufficient, the deductible is still an “out of pocket” cost.
Motorcycle Medical insurance coverage provides excess medical payments (after any other medical coverage) for any operator or passenger, regardless of fault and subject to the coverage limit on the policy. There are options for limits of liability
Uninsured and Underinsured Motorist Bodily Injury Coverage
It’s one of those perfect summer days, and you head out on your bike for a nice relaxing ride. As you pull through an intersection, a car runs a red light and slams into you. Suddenly, your perfect summer day goes from a great ride to a broken leg. Then, it gets worse when you find out the driver of the car doesn’t have any insurance. It’s for these types of situations that you need Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist Bodily Injury coverage. This motorcycle insurance coverage provides protection for your injuries or death if you are involved in an accident with a motorist who either has no insurance or insufficient coverage, if the other party is considered at fault. There are options for limits of liability
Now let talk about coverage’s to the bike it’s self
Collision Insurance
You’re riding your motorcycle and something catches your eye. Unfortunately, you collide with a construction barrier. Luckily, you’re okay – but your bike isn’t. With Collision coverage, your bike’s repairs or replacement costs (minus your deductible) are covered in the event of an accident caused by collision or upset. Deductible options for this motorcycle insurance coverage are: $100, $250, $500, $1,000, or $2,000.
Comprehensive Insurance
There are many things that can happen to a motorcycle that doesn’t involve a collision. For that, there’s comprehensive coverage.
For example, say you’re cruising and decide to stop for a bite to eat. Unfortunately, your bike doesn’t stop for long because when you walk out of the restaurant, it’s gone. Comprehensive coverage pays for the theft (minus your deductible ).
There are many situations that fall under this category – things like fire, theft, vandalism or hitting a deer or an animal, This about happen to me a few years ago near Bryce Canyon, Utah where I like to ride. Comprehensive coverage an important part of your motorcycle insurance coverage.
Your decision is deciding on a deductible that fits your needs. To match the diverse needs and desires of our customers, we offer the following options: $100, $250, $500, $1,000, or $2,000.
Collision and Comprehensive Insurance is where you can save some money by managing your deductibles. That means you would be taking more or less risk yourself.
Towing Coverage
Towing and labor cost can be added up to the policy.
Typically covers the cost of motorcycle towing when insured needs roadside assistance.
Lease Or Loan Gap Coverage
This coverage typically pays the difference between the Actual Cash Value of the bike and the amount remaining on the loan or lease, in the event of a total loss or theft. Coverage is available if the insured is the original owner or lessee of the insured bike.
You have to have both collision and comprehensive coverage on your policy.
Rental Reimbursement Coverage
This coverage covers the cost of renting an automobile if your bike is damaged or stolen. We will pay what is on the policy declaration page Up to 30 days coverage.
Optional or added Equipment
Now this is a big one for most of us. Once we get a bike we tend to add stuff to it!
This coverage typically protects from loss to any optional or added equipment not installed by the manufacturer as part of the original sale.
It includes such items as crash bars, custom seats, sissy bars, windshields, fairings, saddle bags and more. $1,000 of coverage is included when Comprehensive coverage is purchased. You can also purchase additional coverage up to a maximum of $30,000.

Now we need to talk about Motorcycle Safety
Bikers are about 34 times more likely than passenger car occupants to die in a traffic crash
Riding on a motorcycle can be an exhilarating experience. But it also comes with some risks. Even if a motorcyclist follows every law, he or she can still be involved in an accident. And, as you may know, a motorcyclist is more prone to injuries and death because a motorcycle doesn’t offer much protection. By following a few simple precautions you can help make sure that each trip you take on a bike is a safe one.
Now what precautions can we take- these are just a few of many I could mention.
Sharing to road
- Nearly two-thirds of all motorcycle collisions occur with a passenger car. And most cases, the car driver was at fault.
- In a typical motorcycle accident, motorcyclists have less than two seconds to take action to avoid a collision
- To help prevent collisions from happing – practice these defensive driving techniques:
- Make sure other drivers see you
- Don’t drive in another vehicle’s blind spot
- Drive at a safe speed
- Anticipate other drivers’ actions
- When riding in a group stagger your position with other bikes
- Be aware of your surroundings
Wear protective gear
- Helmets saves lives
- Wear clothing that protects your body from wind, flying insects and debris in the road. Consider wearing Light colored or reflective clothing
- Leather protects you and has shown to be effective in preventing or reducing abrasions and lacerations
- Wear sturdy Foot wear- leather boots work the best. Don’t wear sandals or flip-flops.
Prevent motorcycle thefts
- Always lock your ignition
- Use a strong lock to secure your bike to a stationary object
- Consider equipping your bike with an audible alarm.
- Lock you saddle bags and touring packs.
Sometimes, you just shouldn’t ride.
- When you are tired
- When you are in a negative emotional state
- Been drinking or taking any medicine that can impair you.
-
In Summary
Here is a Checklist, If you are taking notes you may want to write these down.
- Never ride without eye protection and a DOT approved helmet
- Don’t drink and drive
- Make sure other vehicles can see you. Don’t drive in their blind spot.
- Give yourself enough space and time to react to other motorists.
- Use both front and rear brakes together to stop.
- Don’t ride when you are fatigued or taking medicine that can impair your driving
- Be aware of the road conditions and others vehicles around you.
- Practice defensive driving- anticipate possible accidents before they happen.
- Consider taking a motorcycle safety course.
Something that you might consider is getting a separate policy to cover any injuries that are not covered under the Motorcycle policy or your Personal Health Insurance.
Supplemental Accident Insurance
Supplemental Accident insurance can pay you a lump sum benefit for off the job accidental injuries, plus some medical benefits. Because accident insurance is supplemental, it works in addition to other insurance you may have. You can use the policy on its own or to fill a gap left by your other coverage.
I would strongly advise looking into the separate coverage if you participate in potentially dangerous activities such as riding motorcycles, 4 wheelers, ATV etc.
What do I do now?
I would encourage you to come in to or call the office so we can answer your questions. We would really like to help you with your insurance.
For us to give you a quote we would need the following information:
- Description of the bikes you want insured on the policy (Yr Make Model Vin #)
- Who the Drivers are residing in your household
- What Coverages and limits that you want
- Where you live
- When were your tickets, accident or claims
- What discounts or surcharges that may apply to you
I also strongly suggest that you Read your current Policy
Make sure the correct bike is on the policy
Make sure you have the coverage that you need and want.
Make sure all of your accessories and chrome add on’s are covered.
Yes, I know that you paid a lot for your Bike and you want to get the least expensive coverage, but when it comes down to it, the reason you purchase motorcycle insurance is to be protected in the event of a loss!
